A New Generation of Explosion Proof Emergency Lighting: BAJ52-6

Three times the light output, twice the emergency duration, and expanded certification for IIC gas and IIIC dust hazardous areas.

Explosion proof emergency lighting is essential where safe evacuation and emergency illumination must be maintained within classified hazardous areas.

For many years, Inatex has supplied the Warom BAJ52-20 explosion-proof emergency light for Zone 1 and Zone 2 applications. The introduction of the new BAJ52-6 Explosion-Proof Emergency Light represents a significant development in Warom’s hazardous-area emergency lighting range, offering broader hazardous-area certification, substantially higher LED light output and twice the emergency operating duration.

With IECEx certification for both gas and combustible dust hazardous areas, the BAJ52-6 provides a new option for industrial facilities requiring reliable emergency illumination in demanding environments.

Designed for Gas and Dust Hazardous Areas

The BAJ52-6 is designed for use across Zones 1, 2, 21 and 22, significantly broadening the applications compared with the established BAJ52-20.

The BAJ52-6 carries IECEx certification CQM 26.0062X, with the following hazardous-area markings:

Ex db IIC T6 Gb
Ex tb IIIC T80°C Db

This provides coverage for gas environments up to Group IIC as well as Group IIIC combustible dust environments.

The fitting is therefore suitable for consideration across a broad range of hazardous industrial applications, subject to the hazardous-area classification and installation requirements of the individual project.

How Does the BAJ52-6 Compare with the BAJ52-20?

The BAJ52-20 has been a proven explosion proof emergency lighting solution supplied by Inatex for many years. It remains a practical option for conventional Zone 1 and Zone 2, Group IIB applications.

However, the BAJ52-6 significantly extends the available performance envelope.

The BAJ52-20 is certified Ex d IIB T4 and provides 90 minutes of emergency operation. Its standard halogen configuration produces 2 × 100 lumens, with an LED version providing 2 × 90 lumens.

The BAJ52-6 increases emergency operation to 180 minutes and provides 2 × 300 lumens using LED light sources as standard.

This means the new fitting provides approximately three times the rated light output of the standard BAJ52-20 while doubling the emergency operating duration.

The environmental specification has also improved. The BAJ52-20 is rated IP65 with an ambient operating range of -20°C to +55°C, while the BAJ52-6 increases protection to IP66 and extends the specified ambient temperature range to -40°C to +60°C.

For new projects requiring IIC gas capability, combustible dust certification, greater light output or longer emergency duration, the BAJ52-6 represents a substantial advancement in explosion proof emergency lighting.

Three Hours of Emergency Illumination

One of the most significant improvements is the integrated emergency battery system.

Under normal operating conditions, the BAJ52-6 battery charges automatically. If the normal power supply is interrupted, the emergency system automatically activates the LED light heads.

The specified emergency operating time is 180 minutes, providing up to three hours of emergency illumination following loss of normal power.

The fitting incorporates a 3.6 V, 4 Ah Ni-Cd battery with overcharge and over-discharge protection. The specified charging time is 24 hours.

The extended operating duration can provide additional time for personnel evacuation, emergency response, controlled shutdown or access following a power failure.

High-Output Adjustable LED Lighting

The BAJ52-6 incorporates two adjustable LED light heads, allowing the direction of illumination to be configured for the particular installation.

Each LED is rated at 3 W, with a rated luminous flux of 2 × 300 lumens.

The twin-head arrangement can be particularly useful for illuminating:

  • access and egress routes
  • platforms and walkways
  • stairs and changes in elevation
  • process and equipment areas
  • hazardous-area entrances
  • emergency escape routes

The individual light heads can be directed towards the areas where emergency illumination is most important.

Wider Choice of Supply Voltages

Another major improvement over the BAJ52-20 is electrical flexibility.

The BAJ52-20 is specified for a 220–240 V AC supply. The BAJ52-6 is available in configurations covering:

100–277 V AC, 50/60 Hz
100–250 V DC
24–48 V AC/DC
12 V AC/DC

This substantially broadens the range of applications, particularly for industrial facilities, packaged equipment and remote installations operating with DC or low-voltage auxiliary electrical systems.

Built for Demanding Industrial Environments

The BAJ52-6 enclosure is manufactured from copper-free aluminium alloy with a yellow powder-coated finish (RAL 1021), while exposed fasteners are stainless steel.

The light heads incorporate toughened glass covers designed to withstand temperature changes.

With IP66 ingress protection and an ambient temperature rating from -40°C to +60°C, the BAJ52-6 is designed for demanding industrial and outdoor environments where conventional emergency lighting equipment may not be appropriate.

Typical BAJ52-6 Applications

The combination of gas and dust certification makes the BAJ52-6 suitable for consideration across a wide range of hazardous-area industries, including oil and gas facilities, LNG and gas processing plants, chemical and petrochemical facilities, mining and mineral processing, grain and bulk materials handling, and industrial manufacturing and processing facilities.

The appropriate equipment selection should always be confirmed against the hazardous-area classification, environmental conditions and electrical requirements of the individual installation.

BAJ52-6 Explosion Proof Emergency Lighting from Inatex

The new BAJ52-6 expands the hazardous-area emergency lighting options available from Inatex.

While the established BAJ52-20 remains suitable for many conventional IIB gas applications, the BAJ52-6 provides a significantly broader specification with IIC gas and IIIC dust capability, 180-minute emergency duration, higher LED output, IP66 protection and a much wider range of supply voltages.

For engineers specifying explosion proof emergency lighting for new hazardous-area projects, the BAJ52-6 provides a modern, high-performance alternative for both gas and combustible dust environments.
